What it is: Bulbul is an iPhone and iPad app that helps children of Pakistani families grow up speaking Urdu, through short spoken lessons with Bulbul the songbird.
Who it's for: Children ages 3–12 in Pakistani and Urdu-speaking families outside Pakistan, their parents, and teens or adults who understand Urdu but don't speak it confidently.
What makes it different: Spoken Urdu comes first: kids hear it, understand it, then say it. The alphabet is not the starting point, and reading is optional for older children.
Platform: iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later). Not available on Android or the web.
Availability: Coming soon to the App Store.
Cost: Free to start: the opening Say hello lessons, the Family words world and practice of anything already learned are free. A subscription unlocks the full course. Prices are shown in the App Store.
Lessons: About five minutes each, built on one arc: remember, meet, build, find, use, say, talk, finish. Under-6s see at most two choices at a time.
Speaking practice: Bulbul listens after the child hears a model. Where iOS provides Apple's on-device Urdu speech recognition, Bulbul checks the attempt on the device. It never says “wrong”, allows at most three tries, and always lets a child skip.
Privacy: No ads and no account. Voice attempts are temporary files on the device and are never uploaded. Bulbul doesn't send analytics or advertising data about learners; purchases go through Apple's App Store.
For parents: A gated parent area shows what was practised this week, what your child can now say, and a “practice together tonight” idea for home. Up to six learner profiles per device.
Works offline: Lessons, pictures and audio are stored on the device, so lessons run without an internet connection. Purchases need a connection.

Longer description

Bulbul teaches spoken Urdu to children (ages 3–12) growing up outside Pakistan, and to teens and adults who understand Urdu but want to speak it. Kids hear warm, clear Urdu narration, understand it through pictures and family situations, and say it out loud. Reading comes later. Five-minute lessons, a parent area with practice ideas for home, and nothing your child says leaves the device.
