What is Bulbul?
Bulbul (بلبل, named after the songbird) is an iPhone and iPad app that helps children grow up speaking Urdu. Kids hear warm, clear Urdu, understand it through pictures and family moments, and say it out loud with Bulbul the songbird. It's made for families outside Pakistan whose children understand a little Urdu, or none, and answer in English.
What ages is Bulbul for?
Children from 3 to 12, set up in age bands (3–5, 6–8, 9–12), plus teens and adults who understand Urdu but want to speak it. Under-6s see at most two picture choices at a time and never need to read. For older children, a parent can turn on Roman Urdu or Urdu script as optional support.
My child doesn't speak any Urdu. Can they start?
Yes. Bulbul starts from zero with greetings like Assalam-o-Alaikum and “Aap kaise hain?”, and every word is heard with a picture before your child is asked to use it. If your child already understands a lot, a short optional listening check during setup can suggest a later starting point, and you can change it any time.
Do I need to speak Urdu myself?
No. Every line is spoken in the app and the English meaning is always one tap away. If you do speak some Urdu, each lesson ends with a small idea to try together at home, so Urdu moves from the screen to the dinner table.
Does Bulbul record my child's voice?
Bulbul listens so your child can practise speaking, but nothing is uploaded. Each try is a temporary file on the device and is deleted when the lesson ends or the app closes. Where the iPhone or iPad has Apple's on-device Urdu speech recognition, Bulbul checks the try on the device; otherwise Bulbul simply says “I heard you”. A grown-up can switch the check off in the parent area.
What happens when my child gets something wrong?
Nothing scary. Bulbul never says “wrong”. Bulbul shows the answer, plays it again and brings it back a little later in the lesson. Speaking gets at most three gentle tries, then “Good try!” and the lesson moves on. Your child can always skip.
Does Bulbul teach the Urdu alphabet?
Not first. Bulbul teaches spoken Urdu: hear it, understand it, say it. Urdu script can be shown as optional exposure for older children, but Bulbul isn't a reading course yet.
Which Urdu does Bulbul teach?
Everyday Pakistani Urdu, the way families speak it at home: greetings, family words for each side (Nani and Dadi, Khala and Phuppo, Mamu and Chacha), polite “aap” and “jee” for elders, and the things children say at the table and at play. Urdu script appears in its own Nastaliq style, and speaking practice is only ever checked as Urdu.
Does Bulbul replace Urdu classes?
No, it fits between them. Think of Bulbul as five minutes of speaking practice on the days without a class or tutor. Weekend schools, tutors and grandparents do things an app can't.
How long are lessons? How much screen time is this?
About five minutes. Lessons for under-6s are kept to twelve screens or fewer, and you choose a small daily goal. Bulbul is meant to be short and calm, then followed by real conversation at home.
How much does Bulbul cost?
Bulbul is free to start: the opening Say hello lessons, the Family words world and practice with words your child already knows are free. A subscription unlocks the rest of the course. The price is shown in the App Store before you pay, and you can cancel any time in your Apple account settings.
Can siblings share one device?
Yes. Up to six learners can each have their own profile and progress on one device, so brothers and sisters don't overwrite each other.
Does Bulbul work offline?
Yes. Lessons, pictures and audio are stored on the device, so Bulbul works without an internet connection. You only need a connection to subscribe or restore a purchase.
Are there ads or accounts?
No ads and no account. Bulbul doesn't send analytics or advertising data about learners. Progress stays on your device, and you can save a family backup file yourself.
Who is the voice in Bulbul?
One warm, clear narrator reads every line, in Urdu and in English. The voice is made with ElevenLabs' AI voice technology and chosen for natural Pakistani pronunciation, and there's a slower option for every word. Your child's name is never sent to a voice service.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. Bulbul is for iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later).
Is Bulbul safe for a 4-year-old?
Yes, by design. Bulbul has no ads and no account. Under-6s see at most two picture choices at a time and never need to read. Voice tries stay on the device as temporary files and are deleted, and Bulbul doesn't send analytics or advertising data about learners. Settings and the subscription sit behind a grown-up gate.
Does Bulbul check my child's pronunciation?
No. Where the iPhone or iPad has Apple's on-device Urdu speech recognition, Bulbul checks whether Bulbul understood the words; it never grades accent or pronunciation, and the check never counts toward progress. Elsewhere Bulbul simply says “I heard you”. At most three tries, then “Good try!”, and your child can always skip.
What does Bulbul teach?
Everyday spoken Pakistani Urdu for home. Children start with four opening conversations (Say hello, Ask for a snack, Play together, Meet your family), then eleven word worlds: Family, Food, Animals, My Body, Colours, At Home, Do This!, Places, Numbers, Clothes and First Phrases. Every word is heard with a picture and its English meaning before your child is asked to use it.
Does my child need to read to use Bulbul?
No. Bulbul is a speaking course: children hear Urdu, understand it through pictures, and say it. Younger children answer with pictures only. For older children, a parent can switch on Roman Urdu or Urdu script as optional support, but reading is never required.
Does Bulbul work on iPad?
Yes. Bulbul is built for iPad as well as iPhone (iOS 17 or later), in portrait, landscape and Split View. Up to six children can each have their own profile on one device, and a family backup file keeps everyone's progress.
Can grandparents use Bulbul with my child?
Yes. Once the app is open, a lesson doesn't need a parent's help: a grandparent can sit beside your child, hear each Urdu line, and answer back for real. Every lesson ends with a “practice together tonight” idea, and it works just as well on a video call with Nani.
Is the Urdu voice a real person?
No. Every line in Bulbul is read by one narrator, Reva, a voice made with ElevenLabs' AI voice technology and chosen for natural Pakistani pronunciation. Lines are generated from the written Urdu, and each one is listened to and approved before it ships in a release. There's a slower option for every word. We call it warm, clear Urdu narration, not a recording of a person.
Who makes Bulbul?
