Urdu food words for kids: what to say at the table (with audio)

The Urdu children need at mealtimes, with audio: I want water, I'm hungry, more please, I'm full, the food is delicious, plus roti, chawal, daal, doodh, aam and other food words.

The most useful Urdu sentence for a child is Mujhe paani chahiye مجھے پانی چاہیے (I want water). Change one word and it asks for anything on the table: Mujhe roti chahiye, Mujhe doodh chahiye. Mealtimes happen every day, which makes them the easiest place to practise.

Asking for what you want

  • مجھے روٹی چاہیےMujhe roti chahiyeI want rotiHear it in the app
  • مجھے آم چاہیےMujhe aam chahiyeI want mangoHear it in the app

Mujhe … chahiye means “I want …”. Children don’t need the grammar: once they’ve said it with paani, they start swapping in other words on their own.

The one trick that works best: when your child points at the water jug, wait a beat before you pour. Look at them, smile, and let them ask. If they need help, say the first word, Mujhe…, and let them finish.

Where these come from

Every phrase comes from Bulbul, the iPhone and iPad app we make to help children speak Urdu. Asking for a snack is one of the first conversations in the app: children hear it, choose what they’d say in a picture of a family moment, then say it out loud. Try a few with audio on our Urdu words page.
